British Schools Score Champs 2005
This year we took a strong team to Shipley Park in Derbyshire to compete in the annual championships. The weather held out for almost the whole morning of running but unfortunately the rain started for the prize giving. In this competition, each competitor has exactly the same map with 29 controls on and has a set time (45mins for Yrs7-9, 60mins for Yrs10-13) in which to visit as many control sites as possible. This is a very different format to the normal ordered controls and is favoured by some although many prefer the traditional format. It is hard to weigh up how many controls you are able of getting in your time limit as points are deducted for every minute or part minute late. It is even harder to try and work out the best order in which to visit the controls to save time and be logical. Our Lower Secondary girls (Yrs 7-9) certainly succeeded at this, winning their category by 405 points! (Between the 6 counters they got 40 more controls than the second placed team) Our Lower Secondary boys worked hard and won their age category putting in a great team performance. They succeeded by 30 points to Sandbach School. Moving up the age groups to the Upper Secondary girls the success continued with another great set of results to place the school 1st, this time creating a winning margin of 415 points! The following pupils achieved individual podium positions:
Year 7 Girls 2nd Emma Kettley 3rd Philippa Rawbone Year 7 Boys 3rd Robert Moffat
Year 9 Girls 1st Harriet Batten 3rd Sophie Kirk
Year 12/13 Girls 1st Joanna Halliday
It was an enjoyable event with well-planned courses making route choice a key skill. The day went well and we did even better than we could have predicted. Lets hope for the same kind of success at the up and coming British Schools Championships.
